  • WASIL provides certified seeds, agrochemicals and fertilisers to farmers on credit (some under the Anchor Borrower Program (ABP)*)
  • Farmers, organised under cooperatives, receive low interest financing from the CBN to purchase seeds and inputs
  • WASIL provides capacity building and Farmer Business School training to farmers
  • At harvest, WASIL provides guaranteed off-take of farm produce to the extent of inputs provided and pays for any excess produce directly to farmers accounts

* Other farmers receive direct credit in form of certified seeds, fertilisers and agrochemicals from WASIL which is repaid at harvest outside of the ABP

Note: Out-grower farmer’s performances are graded on a regular basis using proprietary KPI’s. WASIL eliminates poor performers from the program to improve overall outcome.

The out-grower program is implemented in nine steps

Site selection
Identify the area for production. (Always start small to optimize monitoring and control over farmers)
Farmer registration
Select and validate farmers, leveraging traditional rulers and government information resources
Database creation
Create a bankable farmer database containing historical records of out-grower engagements with individual farmers
Group formation
Form groups and select group leaders
Capacity Building

Train the farmers on best farming techniques (Good Agricultural Practices). Additional training is given to group leaders on management and monitoring

Input Distribution
Provide inputs to the farmers and train them on money management and loan repayment
Crop Monitoring
Provide extension services on a continuous basis. (Success is about consistent rapid response in times of crisis)
Harvest
Train farms on best practices during harvest and ways to minimize post-harvest losses
Final Off-take
Procurement is usually in batches against off-take agreements.

WASIL conducts farm-level sustainability initiatives via out-growers

  • WASIL’s CRS efforts aim towards promoting ‘sustainable development’ by working towards empowering the ‘poorest of the poor’
  • WASIL has partnered with the DFID’s Business Innovation Facility and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to enhance sustainable long term self-reliance alongside other development partners like CARI, GIZ etc.
  • Farm level engagement with farmers to impart Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Yield Enhancement Techniques (YET) trainings
  • Aim to significantly and sustainably increase yields per hectare
  • Supported by high quality certified seeds, fertilizers, agro chemicals & inputs applications, and via demonstration farms
